One Planet Partners has entered India's private equity market with the launch of its maiden fund, aiming to raise more than Rs 3,000 crore in a move that underscores growing investor appetite for the country's mid-market growth companies. The fund has been set up in partnership with Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank and will focus on businesses in energy, mobility and manufacturing, sectors that sit at the intersection of industrial expansion, electrification and supply-chain localisation.
The launch comes at a time when India's private capital market is increasingly looking beyond late-stage technology bets and toward operating businesses with clear revenue visibility, capital needs and long-term structural tailwinds. For funds such as One Planet, the opportunity lies in backing companies that are large enough to scale meaningfully but still early enough to benefit from institutional growth capital, operational support and sector expertise. The firm said it intends to write cheques of Rs 100 crore to Rs 500 crore, placing it squarely in the growth-equity and mid-market buyout band rather than the venture segment.
Mid-Market Capital Push
The fund's strategy reflects a broader shift in India's investment landscape. As manufacturing capacity expands, electric mobility adoption accelerates and energy transition themes deepen, mid-sized companies are increasingly seeking patient capital to fund expansion, technology upgrades and market consolidation. Unlike early-stage startups, these businesses often require larger, structured investments to scale plants, build distribution, strengthen working capital and navigate regulatory complexity.
One Planet's focus on energy, mobility and manufacturing is notable because these sectors are tightly linked to India's industrial policy priorities. Mobility, in particular, is undergoing rapid change as electric two-wheelers, fleet electrification and shared mobility models gain traction. Energy and manufacturing, meanwhile, are benefiting from policy support, domestic demand and a push for supply-chain resilience. A fund with a multi-sector industrial lens may be positioned to capture cross-over opportunities where technology, infrastructure and consumer adoption converge.
The partnership with Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank also adds institutional weight to the launch. While the announcement did not disclose the full fundraising timeline, the target of over Rs 3,000 crore suggests a fund of meaningful scale for India's growth-capital market. Such a corpus would allow the manager to build a diversified portfolio while reserving follow-on capital for winners, an important feature in sectors where execution risk and capital intensity remain high.
First Bet On Yulu
One Planet has already deployed capital into Yulu Bikes Private Limited, participating in the company's $93 million Series C round. The investment is an early signal of the fund's thematic direction and its willingness to back businesses operating at the frontier of urban mobility. Yulu, which operates in the shared electric mobility space, sits within a category that has attracted strong investor interest as cities search for cleaner, more efficient transport solutions.
The Yulu investment is also strategically relevant because it aligns with the fund's stated focus on mobility. Shared electric fleets can require significant capital for vehicle deployment, battery systems, network expansion and technology infrastructure, making them a natural fit for growth investors with a long-term horizon. By joining a large Series C round, One Planet appears to be positioning itself as a partner for scale-up companies rather than a speculative early-stage backer.
For India's private equity market, the launch adds another specialist capital provider targeting the country's industrial and transition economy. The opportunity set is broad, but execution will matter. Funds in this segment must balance valuation discipline, sector concentration and operational oversight while navigating a market where growth narratives are abundant but profitability timelines can vary widely. If One Planet can combine sector focus with disciplined deployment, its maiden fund could become a meaningful participant in India's next phase of industrial and mobility-led expansion.
