"Beyond Wheat and Paddy: Why Crop Diversification and Micro-Irrigation Hold the Key to India’s Rural GDP"

Punjab and Haryana built India’s food security on a wheat-paddy cycle that now looks increasingly unsustainable. Groundwater depletion, rising input costs, and the environmental burden of paddy stubble burning are converging into a structural rural crisis. The policy question is no longer whether diversification is desirable, but whether the state can redesign incentives fast enough to make it profitable for farmers. The answer lies in a harder, more granular transition: shifting acreage toward millets, oilseeds, pulses and select high-value crops such as FCV tobacco, while scaling micro-irrigation, procurement reform and price-risk management. Without a credible income bridge, farmers will stay locked into water-intensive cereals. With it, India’s rural GDP could gain resilience, productivity and climate durability.
