Bennu’s Origins Point to a Surprising Region of the Early Solar System
New analysis of samples returned by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission suggests asteroid Bennu did not form where scientists long assumed, but instead assembled from material that originated much farther from the Sun, near the solar system’s ice line. The finding strengthens the case that Jupiter’s early migration helped redistribute water-rich and carbon-bearing material that later seeded the building blocks of planets, including Earth.
