Forgotten Greenland Samples Point to Warmer Arctic Summers in a Deep Ice-Free Past
Scientists have reexamined long-forgotten sediment samples from Greenland’s Camp Century, a Cold War-era military base buried beneath the ice, and found evidence that the island experienced significantly warmer summers during a past period when much of its ice cover had vanished. The findings sharpen concern over how quickly the Arctic can respond to warming and what that may mean for future sea-level rise and climate stability.
