Engineered Nanostructured Surfaces Could Offer a New Front in the Fight Against Marine Biofouling
Researchers are advancing engineered nanostructured surfaces as a potential non-toxic way to curb marine biofouling, the costly buildup of organisms on ships, offshore platforms and other submerged infrastructure. The approach could help reduce drag, improve energy efficiency and lower maintenance demands across the blue economy if it can be scaled beyond the laboratory.
