Pompeii’s Ashes Help Scientists Date Earth’s Past with New Precision
Researchers have used volcanic rocks from the Mount Vesuvius eruption that buried Pompeii in A.D. 79 to sharpen one of geology’s most important dating tools. By comparing the eruption’s mineral record with known historical timing, scientists say they can now calibrate volcanic clocks to within decades rather than centuries.
