‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’ Collapses Under Its Own Stereotypes
Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s latest entry in the ‘Monster’ franchise attempts to connect one female killer to another, but the result is a blunt, overdetermined exercise in sensationalism. Rather than probing the social and psychological forces behind violence, the series flattens its women into symbols of trauma, rage and punishment, leaving little room for complexity or insight.
