Supreme Court Widens Review of DGP Appointment Laws Nationwide After Jharkhand Raises Questions on Centre’s ‘Special Affection’
The Supreme Court has broadened its scrutiny of how police chiefs are appointed across India, directing its amicus curiae to work with the Union Public Service Commission and examine state police laws for possible violations of the court’s 2006 ruling on director general of police appointments. The move came after Jharkhand challenged what it described as the Centre’s “special affection” for certain states in the handling of top police postings, sharpening a long-running federal dispute over police autonomy and executive discretion.
