Navaratri and Syama Sastri: How His Swara Jatis Became an Intimate Dialogue with Kamakshi

As Navaratri begins, attention turns to Syama Sastri’s three surviving swara jatis, works widely regarded as among the finest in Carnatic music. More than technical compositions, they reveal a rare fusion of rhythmic sophistication and devotional intensity, with Kamakshi at the centre of an intimate musical conversation. The pieces endure because they are both structurally exacting and emotionally direct, offering a window into how one of the Trinity of Carnatic music translated bhakti into form, phrase and cadence.
