A widening mismatch in India’s rabies mortality data is raising urgent questions about how the country tracks one of its deadliest yet preventable diseases. While the Health Ministry’s surveillance programme reported 50 deaths in 2023, the Registrar-General recorded 271 fatalities and an ICMR study estimated annual deaths at 5,726, underscoring a major policy and public health challenge.
